Another reason to mistrust garages?

Last night a friend brought a Ford courier van to my house asking me to have a quick look at the nearside front brake which was sticking on and heating up. He had it booked ito garage for Tuesday or Wednesday but it was getting worse and he wanted it to travel 7 miles to work in morning. I said didn't you have a bit of bother with this a while ago and he replied yes, the garage stripped and cleaned it.
Upon dismantling I found the bleed nipple and hose had probably never been undone, score marks and dints in the piston where someone had probably levered it, and the seal in wrong way round, and a bit or rust / dirt. A quick clean and polish up and refit seal correctly and all worked fine.
It really does make you wonder about the competence of some people (I hestitate to call them mechanics) garages employ.
I did a bit of asking about and the bloke who supposedly sorted this caliper out is an MOT tester!!!

There should be a “Trip Advisor” type set up for garage services. I will relate a recent example of poor and costly service dished out to me by a “friendly” local garage I had been using (no more) up to that point.

Following the replacement of the front brake discs and pads. On collecting the car I noticed a fair amount of play in the brake pedal, but as I was due to be up in Yorkshire the following day visiting my parents, bled them through when I got home and all seemed well. Or so I thought.

A few days later, home and driving to work in the morning I experienced front wheel wobble. I stopped and inspected. Clearly the outer wheel bearing had been put back dry and over tightened leading to a catastrophic failure.

I subsequently discovered (inside information) that when replacing the discs that the brake callipers were split and not removed as required.

Later the same front wheel bearing was playing up again, evident by a significant grating noise, particularly when changing direction. I stripped this down and inspected. The previous repair to the outer bearing would appear to have been lacking as debris from the previous collapse had attached itself to the stub axle preventing the new outer bearing from seating properly (the inner had not been touched, evident by marking). The bearing had been turning in the casing, confining it to the scrap bin. I also needed to replace the stub-axle and hub.

You would have though I’d learnt my lesson by now, sadly not, just too convenient to use them, and I though they had been really good up to this point over the 10 years or so I had been using them.

The next job I entrusted was to have a leaking pinion oil seal replaced which at least at first cured the leak, closely followed by a fairly significant whine from the diff, which was extremely upsetting and expensive to put right and required a reconitioned diff.

The most obvious cause of this would have been an over tightened pinion nut which then over crushed the collapsible spacer. Whilst this can be a common error it is costly to put right. I approached the garage but they were not really interested judging, again from some inside information filtering back to me and decided it was going to be so difficult to categorically prove that I chose to take no further action.

I will never use these people again and I will never recommend them to anyone I know.

Nick i have had same problem....with certain garages...



who have been good in the past.




but one man's meat is another man's poison!.


There are sites you can set up blogs about garages etc... not just things like hotels and all that... Undecided

In the "old days" there were real mechanics who repaired cars and their components - now the so called mechanics just replace parts (at the owners expense) until the problem goes away!! Sad Sad

Whilst I agree that there are some garages that seem to employ guys who only want to plug in lap tops and others that can only swap parts at vast expense, there are still proper mechanics out thre. You usally find they work for them self and also tend to specialize. Manufactures don't help by making 'sealed for life' parts which are near on impossible to take apart and then you cannot source the 50pence part to repair it.
The more complicated the vehicles become, the less likley you are to find a good mechanic to fix it, you did not have to be very bright to fix a Morris Minor, it was basic mechanics, compare that to the technology involved in say the new XF and the fact they keep upgrading the software, how can an independant hope to keep up. Even a simple job such as changing wheel bearings is no longer straighforward, duel mass flywheels are causing problems, some garages fit a 'conversion', which causes other problems later down the road, The modern vehicle is not designed to be taken apart, it is designed to make the dealer money!!
A thermostat for a Mondeo comes built into a housing and cost £100, what was wrong with the old type for a tenner? nothing, but there is not much profit in a tenner. anyway rant over Cheesy     Brian
