Reminds me of an old joke as follows:
A man in a range rover drives into a village with a river running through it and and the road crosses the river by via a ford. The local yokel is sat on a bench next to the ford and the drtiver asks if the water is shallow enough to drive through, the yokel glances at the range rover and says "yes no problem". The driver drives in , the water comes over the bonnet and the rover conks. Angril he shouts at the yokel" I thought you said it was shallow" Thew yokel replies "I thoyught it was, it only comes half way up my ducks"
Many years ago I was in the back of a Ford Anglia van which was driven into a ford deep enough to drown the electrics and stopped the van in the middle of the ford. The 3 of us in the back and the passenger got out to push the van off the ford. When we jumped out there was no longer enough weight to hold the van on the slippery concrete and the van and driver got washed off downstream. The van rolled over quite a few times before it jammed against at tree. Driver was a bit shaken but unhurt. Lifted it out with a tractor, cleaned the points & carb and WD40ied the plug leads, fitted another battery and it started  and drove home. However water had got in everywhere and over the next few months evything failed bit at a time.
Cheers

It makes you wonder, doesn't it?

We appear to have advanced so far in the ridculous idea that life can be made completely risk free that some sections of the population are incapable of making a judgement about their own safety; they expect someone else to have done it for them.

I did have an idea about the problem of flooded roads.

There are a couple of places on my route to and from work where surface water does occasionally collects to a point where it isn't obvious what the depth is.  I had thought to go and stick some coloured tapes on a piece of street furniture (or fence post or tree stump or similar) at heights above the road surface of, say, 20cm, 40 cm and 60 cm.  The bottom one might be green (the XJS would be OK at twenty) the middle one yellow and the top one red.  If they are all clear of the water then driving through would be OK.  If the yellow or red are covered, I am going to turn back.

If we could all do this for places in our area that are liable to flood, the discerning motorist (who understands the code) might be spared the embarassment of getting stuck.

It might not help the Darwin award candidate who drives on into five feet of fast flowing flood water, but then perhaps nothing can.

Bit stupid when the depth is clearly marked. Having said that I saw something on telly a couple of days ago which said the average person in Britain has a reading age of 11 or less. Maybe the driver thought 4ft was 4 inches.

Ralph went through a ford the other day with some trepidation even though the level was only marked at somewhere about 9 inches. Personally I leave fords alone

Me too - I prefer Jags.  Grin

I read that the guy who died was a respected judge. Which is more than can be said of his wife who was driving!

And the difference is ??
Jaq...anyone driving an XJS would avoid a ford, XJS electrics and water do not mix.

Would not take the XJ-S into a ford though have fond memories of going through the ford from Bucklebury to Frilsham as a child in Dads old S Type and indeed stopping and paddling in the ford. This was usuallly on a slightly elongated route to Grans house  Wink  Smiley  Grin
